Reviews: Herman Melville is the likes to which I shall never know except through his novels, so bounteous is he through the seafaring waves each time a turn a page (be in paper or on screen, which is the way I do it now). Melville’s Moby Dick, I understand, has like 7 different levels of allegory. I can only get about 2 or 3. I shall tell you one of them.
The tall ship — and I love tall ships — is named the Pequod. It is like a nation in the midst of the sea of nation. I am like Ishmael, a new found member of this ship and a new found Christian searching for the right way to please God. Queequeg is unsaved in the Christian scheme of things, and I befriend him. Starbuck is the Chief Mate and one that I can follow again in the Christian way of viewing the story. Capt. Ahab is, of course the captain of the boat. He is like the President of these United States, Obama. The other members of the crew are like citizens of the USA. Like Capt. Ahab, we are going of course to battle the Christains in the form of the white whale Moby Dick who is scared with the harpoons the ungodly man has thrown into his side. Ahab tells the ship were to go, and we go, despite what God has to say about it. The citizens, instead of mutinying, just go along, bemoaning him but following Ahab down into the depths beneath the ocean…except for Ishmael.
More can be said for the movie and for the book but, for a time, I will view this again and make more comments on it.

This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obsession with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so crazed by his desire to kill the whale, that he is prepared to sacrifice everything, including his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship to find and destroy his nemesis, Moby Dick. |
