Reviews: What can I say, I love John Wayne but only moderately this film.
First let me address those who think this film, in light of other films of that era being so negative about the conflict in Vietnam, say that is it totally inaccurate and not the position of the USA, or others think it's totally accurate. Which is it?
I say both. Vietnam protesters here in the FREE USA are right, but this film is also right. Wayne made this film in light of protests. "Platoon," is right too. I don't know, I'm not getting myself across here. Everybody in the USA have differing opinions about numerous things, thus we did during this conflict.
Now as far as the filmmaking is concerned -- Wayne should have known better, spent more time working on the screenplay. I'm sorry but it looks like people are acting (no, I don't mean those of the Green Berets who acted, they can't help it, they are professional actors) but Wayne, Janssen, Hutton, Ray etc all acted, not one seemed like he was real. That's what I go to the cinema for, to immerse myself into the plot that I don't realize they are acting.
Plus the explosions, the model Huey blown up and you can tell it is a model about a foot long -- argh!
Wayne, when they push back in the camp, says "fall back" REPEATEDLY. Yes, "fall back," this film is one where Wayne fanatics (I am one) can say "I saw it," then let everybody view "The Cowboys" or "The Searchers," excellent Wayne vehicles! |
