Reviews: In the year following the release of “Gus,” I was just beginning my college education at a Baptist college in the mid-Missouri state (my father had his first church in Sedalia). “Gus” was shown at the room where all the students gathered for chaple, bands, or movies. I thot since it was Disney, it had to be good, right?
Wrong.
Sure, it was not that bad. Tim Conway got his fair share of laughs. Don Knotts was not in it for much. Bob Crain was the star of Hogans Heros on TV before he was murdered. Ed Asner was fine, and later turned in a glorious performance in Pixars “Up” as the old man. Who was the star? Perhaps Gus, the mule (no, he did not talk as Francis did, but he had “brains,” for a rather hum-drum film.
