Reviews: When the titles are flowing by, you hear the film score by Ennio Morricone. Oh the sound that comes from the orchestra and whistle that Morricone thought up and wrote the music. He’s still doing it with “The Hateful Eight,” from Quinton Tarantino (top of his list are “The Mission, The Untouchables” and “Cinema Paradiso.”)
Sergio Leone, the director, thot the Japanese film “Yojimbo,” a 1961 Samurai film by Kurosawa and starring my favorite Toshirô Mifune (and which one I own) was very good and thot it might make a good Western. Since Leone is from Italy, it became known as a Spaghetti Western. Mr. Leone turned the Western genre upside-down with its rundown houses, dusty streets, shabby clothes and faces with lots of stubble and dirt. Quite the far cry to the American Western at that time.
And Clint Eastwood became a film star thanks to A Fistful of Dollars. Eastwood plays a Man with No Name and does it for Leone’s 2 other films, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Oh when, near the end Eastwoods dons an iron breastplate made from an iron stove and covers it up with a poncho. Like Yojimbo, it is great! |
